Onychomycosis is the disease caused by nail fungus. It eats keratin, which is a component of the nail. The fungus is thought to enter between the hard nail and the sensitive nail bed that the nail protects. As the fungus spreads, dead skin accumulates under the nail causing discoloration. If left untreated, the nail plate may separate from the nail bed and fall off. In time, the nail will become thick and deformed. Onychomycosis will not clear up on its own. It will eventually spread to other nails and become quite painful and impair mobility.
